Trip Itinerary

Day 1 - Cemetery of trains, Pueblo de Colchani crafts village - Salar de Uyuni - Isla de incahuasi and more...

Start your adventure at 10:00 AM with a pick-up from your hotel in Uyuni. The journey begins with a visit to the Train Cemetery, a unique and nostalgic site just outside Uyuni. Here, you’ll explore remnants of Bolivia’s industrial past, with rusting locomotives providing a fascinating backdrop for photos.

From there, travel 30 km to the edge of the Salar de Uyuni, stopping at the village of Colchani, renowned for its artisan markets. Browse and shop for handcrafted souvenirs, including textiles, salt carvings, and other unique Bolivian crafts.

Entering the expansive salt flats, you’ll visit key landmarks:

  • Salt Mines: Discover where locals dig for salt, a tradition that has shaped the region’s economy.
  • Salt Museum: Formerly a hotel made entirely of salt, it now serves as a cultural site featuring the iconic Bolivia Monument (once tied to the Dakar Rally) and a vibrant display of world flags.
  • Incahuasi Island: This remarkable coral rock island is a sanctuary for towering cacti, some over 10 meters tall. Take a short hike to the summit or explore the cactus-dotted labyrinth at its base. The panoramic views of the vast white salt flats from here are truly breathtaking. Enjoy a delicious picnic lunch amidst this surreal setting.

In the afternoon, journey northwest toward the Tunupa Volcano, the largest and most imposing volcano in the area. Stop at the charming village of Coqueza, located along the “shore” of the salt flats. For those who are fit and adventurous, a hike up to the Tunupa viewpoint offers a stunning perspective of the salar. You can also visit the Mummy Caves, a si

either Hotel Tambo Coquesa or Tayka de Sal in nearby Tahua. Both accommodations provide a comfortable and authentic experience, blending modern amenities with local charm.
Day 2 - Ruta de Joyas - Ojo de Perdiz

Departure: 07:00 AM from your hotel. The adventure continues as we head south, venturing deeper into the mesmerizing landscapes of the Bolivian highlands. Our first stop is near the village of San Pedro de Quemez, where we explore the remnants of its fascinating burned ruins, a site filled with history and intrigue.

Along the route, we’ll pause at several stunning locations:

  • Mirador Caltama: A scenic viewpoint offering panoramic vistas of the Andean landscape.
  • Pueblos Altiplánicos: Quaint villages that provide a glimpse into traditional life in the high plains.
  • Salar de Chiguana: A smaller but equally captivating salt flat, surrounded by volcanic landscapes.
  • Mirador Volcán Ollague: A lookout point for the still-active Ollague Volcano, which often emits a plume of smoke.
  • Ruta de Joyas: A breathtaking trail that winds through a series of multicolored high-altitude lagoons, each more stunning than the last.

As the day progresses, we journey into the Desierto Siloli, a vast expanse of undulating desert. This surreal, otherworldly landscape is the setting for tonight’s accommodation, a truly unique experience in one of the most remote areas of the trip.

Accomodation: 2nd NIGHT Hotel Tayka del Desierto in Ojo de Perdiz, situated at an altitude of 4,500 meters. This is the highest and most isolated hotel on the itinerary, offering a rare opportunity to connect with nature in solitude. Dinner is included at the hotel, providing a warm and comforting end to an extraordinary day.

Day 3 - Árbol de Piedra - Laguna Colorada - Geyser sol de mañana

Start your adventure early at 06:00-07:00 AM with a pick-up from your hotel in Uyuni. We begin our journey heading toward Chile, taking in some of the most breathtaking landscapes of the highland desert.

Our first stop brings us to the Árbol de Piedra, the famous Stone Tree. This natural rock formation stands as an impressive monument to the forces of wind and erosion, creating a fascinating contrast in the barren desert landscape.

Next, we visit the Laguna Colorada, an explosion of red in the midst of the painted valley. The red hues of the water, combined with the thousands of pink flamingos that flock here, create a surreal and unforgettable sight.

Our journey takes us next to the Geyser Sol de Mañana, where you’ll witness the dramatic geothermal activity at one of the highest points of the trip, reaching nearly 5,000 meters above sea level. This “Andean hell” is an area of boiling mud pits and active geysers, so safety is paramount. While there are no barriers here, we maintain a safe distance to ensure everyone’s well-being while enjoying the natural spectacle.

After the geothermic wonders, we head to the Termas de Polques, a rustic hot spring pool perfect for unwinding. Equipped with changing cabins, this natural thermal pool offers a perfect opportunity to relax. Entrance is just 6 bolivianos (about $1 USD), and we’ll also enjoy a picnic in this serene area.

As we continue our journey, we visit other stunning locations, including:

  • Laguna Chalviri – A beautiful lagoon surrounded by the stark desert landscape.
  • Laguna Verde – Nestled at the foothills of the towering Licancabur Volcano (5,950 meters), this lagoon offers one of the most striking views in the region.
  • Laguna Blanca – Located at the edge of the natural reserve, this serene lagoon marks the boundary before heading to the frontier.

As your journey continues, you will reach the Hito Cajón Border Pass around 1:00-2:00 PM. This crossing marks your transition from Bolivia to Chile, and descend into the heart of the Atacama Desert.

Expect to reach this San Pedro de Atacama town by approximately 2:00-3:00 PM.
